Akchour is a small village at the entrance to Talassemtane National Park, about 45 minutes' drive from Chefchaouen. Two well-known paths start here: one follows the river to the big waterfall, the other climbs to God's Bridge, a natural rock arch above the gorge.
Which path should you choose?
- The big waterfall path: it follows the stream, with clear pools and frequent stepping-stone crossings. Ideal if you love water.
- The God's Bridge path: more climbing through the forest, and a superb view over the gorge from above.
With good fitness you can combine both in a single day.
When to go?
Spring is wonderful: the water is plentiful and the greenery lush. Summer is the busiest season, as people come to swim. If you visit in summer, set off early, before 9 a.m., to enjoy the calm. In winter the water can rise after rain, making river crossings difficult or dangerous.
What to wear?
Good hiking shoes with non-slip soles, because the rocks near the water are slippery. If you plan to swim, bring light clothes and a small towel. Don't walk the rocky sections in flip-flops.
Guide's tip
The most beautiful moment in Akchour is early morning, when the light enters the gorge. Plan to arrive early and save lunch for after the walk, at one of the simple restaurants in the valley.
