Climbing Jbel Lakraa: how to prepare for the highest peak of the western Rif

2,159 metres of fir forest and limestone. The fitness and gear you need before this long day.

Talassemtane National Park

Jbel Lakraa is the highest point in Talassemtane National Park, at around 2,159 metres. The climb is a full day of walking, through Moroccan fir forest, then open pastures and limestone up to the summit. On a clear day the view takes in the whole Rif.

Is this trail right for you?

This is a hard trail. You need to be able to walk for six or seven hours with close to a thousand metres of climbing. If you've never walked more than three hours, start with moderate trails before Lakraa.

How to train

  • Walk twice a week during the month before the hike, with climbs and descents.
  • Climb stairs or hills to strengthen your thighs.
  • Do at least one moderate trail carrying the pack you'll use on summit day.

Essential gear

  • Hiking boots that cover the ankle.
  • At least three litres of water, as springs are rare up high.
  • A warm, windproof jacket: it's much colder at the summit than below.
  • A light lunch and energy snacks.
  • Trekking poles, which help a lot on the way down.

Best time

From late spring to early summer, and again in autumn. In winter snow covers the summit and the climb then requires specific gear and experience.
