Mountain hiking isn't only for experienced athletes. To start, all you need is a trail that suits your level, some simple gear and a little patience. Northern Morocco is a great place to begin: there are short, easy trails near Chefchaouen and Tetouan, and longer ones for when you want a challenge later on.
Start with a short trail
The first time, choose a trail of no more than three or four hours with moderate climbing. The Chrafate waterfalls and the Akchour valley are good examples. The goal is to discover how your body copes with walking on uneven ground, and to come back with a good feeling that makes you want to go again.
Understand the numbers before you set off
Every trail is described by three key numbers:
- Distance: the number of kilometres, there and back.
- Elevation gain: the total metres you climb. It matters more than distance when estimating how tiring a hike is.
- Duration: the approximate time, including breaks.
An 8 km trail with 300 m of climbing is much easier than an 8 km trail with 1,000 m.
The right pace
Walk at a pace that lets you talk without gasping. If you can't finish a sentence, you're going too fast. Take a short break about every hour, and drink before you feel thirsty.
Don't go alone at first
Go with experienced friends or a guide who knows the area. In the mountains paths look alike and the weather can change quickly. A guide picks the trail that suits your level and adapts to your pace.
The next step
Nervous about mountain trails, or is it your first time? Read the beginners' page, then ask guide Imad for an easy route.
After a few easy hikes, try a moderate trail such as the Bouhachem forest. Once you feel confident, the summit of Jbel Lakraa becomes a realistic goal.
