In Al Hoceima National Park the Rif mountains drop straight into the Mediterranean. The result is unique coastal trails, walking above high cliffs before descending to small coves with clear water.
The Cala Iris – Badis trail
The trail starts at Cala Iris beach and follows the coast above the cliffs to Badis. It's about 12 km, with successive ups and downs totalling around 550 metres. Allow roughly five hours including breaks.
What makes it special
- Sea views the whole way.
- Small coves you can climb down to for a break.
- Mediterranean plants: juniper, mastic and wild olive.
- Seabirds soaring above the cliffs, including the osprey this coast is known for.
Watch out for the heat
The trail is exposed with almost no shade, so we prefer spring and autumn and start early. In summer, avoid walking it in the middle of the day.
Precautions
- At least three litres of water.
- A hat and sunscreen.
- Shoes with good soles, as some sections are rocky.
- Stay away from cliff edges, especially in strong wind.
The return from Badis is usually by car and can be arranged in advance when you book.
