One of the best things about hiking in northern Morocco is passing through small villages. Stone houses, little fields, children waving, and sometimes an invitation to a glass of tea. These moments stay with you longer than any view, but they call for respect for local customs.
Greet first
Greet the people you meet. A simple hello opens doors, and ignoring people is seen as disrespectful. If you're invited for tea and don't have time, decline politely and say thank you.
Clothing
Dress modestly in villages: avoid very short clothes, especially near houses and mosques. Carry a light shirt to put on as you enter a village.
Photos
Always ask before photographing a person or a house. Many people, especially women, prefer not to be photographed, and that's a right to respect. Photograph landscapes freely, but not people without their consent.
Fields and property
- Don't walk through cultivated fields, even if it looks like a shortcut.
- Close gates and fences behind you.
- Don't pick fruit from trees without permission.
Support the local economy
Buy honey, olive oil or local cheese from villagers, and have lunch with them. That's how mountain tourism benefits the people who live there.
