When to hike in the Rif? A four-season guide

Each season has its own character and trails in the mountains of northern Morocco. Here's how to pick the right time for your hike.

The Rif mountains change a lot from one season to the next. The same trail can be easy in April, exhausting in August and closed by snow in January. Knowing the seasons helps you choose the right trail.

Spring: the best season

From March to May the rivers are full, the fields green and flowers everywhere. Temperatures are mild and the days get longer. It's the ideal time for most trails, from Akchour to Bouhachem.

Summer: valleys and early mornings

In June, July and August the heat rises, especially in exposed areas. The answer is to start early and choose trails that follow water or run through forest. Akchour and Chrafate are excellent summer destinations. The Al Hoceima coast gets very hot in the middle of the day.

Autumn: calm and colour

From September to November temperatures drop, visitors thin out and the forests turn warm colours. An excellent season for summits such as Jbel Lakraa and Jbel El Kelaa, before the snow arrives.

Winter: snow on the peaks

From December to February it rains down low and snows up high. Lower trails remain possible on clear days, but the high peaks require experience and specific gear. After heavy rain, river crossings can become dangerous.

You'll find the full seasonal calendar for every trail on the “Get ready” page.
