A good daypack holds 20 to 30 litres. The rule is simple: carry what you need for safety and comfort, nothing more. You'll feel every extra kilo in the last hour.
The essentials
- Water: at least two litres, three in summer or on long trails.
- A warm layer: a light jacket, even on a sunny day.
- Rain or wind protection.
- A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
- A charged phone and a small power bank.
- A small first-aid kit: plasters, blister patches, antiseptic and a painkiller.
Food
- A light lunch: bread, cheese, boiled eggs, or whatever you like.
- Quick energy snacks: dates, almonds, dried fruit.
- A sweet or some chocolate for when you get tired.
Useful extras
- Trekking poles on trails with a lot of climbing.
- A small bag for your rubbish.
- A handkerchief or small towel.
- Your ID and a little cash.
How to pack your bag
Put heavy items such as water close to your back and in the middle. Keep things you need often, like sunscreen and snacks, in the outside pockets. Adjust the straps so your hips carry part of the weight.
