Hiking in summer: heat, water and choosing your trail

How to enjoy the mountains in the hot months without risking sunstroke or dehydration.

Quemado beach, Al Hoceima

Summer is holiday season and everyone wants to head for the mountains. But in northern Morocco the heat can be intense in exposed areas. With the right planning you can hike safely and comfortably.

Start at dawn

The most important summer rule is to start early. The first hours of the morning are cool and pleasant. Try to finish the hardest part before noon, and spend the hottest hours in the shade or by water.

Choose trails with water and shade

  • The Akchour valley and the Chrafate waterfalls: water and shade all the way.
  • The high forests of Talassemtane and Bouhachem: less heat thanks to altitude and trees.
  • Avoid exposed coastal trails in the middle of the day.

Water, then more water

Carry at least three litres. Drink a little every twenty minutes; don't wait until you're thirsty. Add a pinch of salt or eat something salty, because you lose salts when you sweat.

Warning signs

Stop at once and find shade if you feel:

  • A headache or dizziness.
  • Nausea or unusual tiredness.
  • You stop sweating and your skin feels hot.

Wet your head and neck, drink slowly, and don't carry on until you feel better.
